Feeling the pinch....fructose malabsorption

Hey guys,

Wondered if anyone could offer some advice to keep me on track.

I started PN just over a month ago and things were going well. I am a vegetarian so it took a little time to adjust my eating habits, but I felt like I was starting to make some great progress.

A few weeks ago, I had to have a test and got told I have Fructose Malabsorption which has really thrown a spanner in the works. I have to cut out a lot of foods - wheat, a lot of fruit, some vegies, onion, garlic, honey...the list goes on. Now I honestly feel like I am starving - I eat my meals and half an hour later I need to eat again.

I don't want to have to reintroduce meat into my diet because it's been absent for over 12 years, but I think it's something I may have to consider...

Any thoughts??

Hi, TheVego,

Are you able to eat eggs? What are your goals and what does a typical day look like meal-wise?

Hey Katie,

Eggs aren't a problem for me, but I try not to have more than 3 a day.

A typical day goes something like this....

Breakfast:
3 egg omlette with capsicum, mushroom, spinach and cottage cheese.

Morning tea:
Would usually have yoghurt, berries and golden pea protein powder or nuts, seeds and dried fruit but I can't have yoghurt anymore and no more dried fruit either. Maybe a banana.

Lunch:
Sushi rolls (as long as they aren't made with sweetened rice) or a tuna salad (either as a salad or in a sandwich)
....by the way, I also try to eat some fish a few times a week.

Afternoon tea:
Protein shake with soy milk, LSA, flax seed oil, natural protein powder and cinammon.

Dinner:
Soy product - sausages or burgers with either brown rice, buckwheat, quinoa and steamed vegies.

So that's a basic rundown, but I found myself getting bored very easily. I was also told to cut down on the lentils as they are not good for fructose malabsorption. Any suggestions would be so greatly appreciated.

In terms of my goals, I would really like to build some muscle and tone up. I am 5'11, weigh 76kgs and have 8% body fat. If I don't eat proper meals I lose weight very easily so obviously I am trying to avoid that. I just wanna stay healthy!!!

I read some websites about fructose malabsorption. I am really sorry you are having these issues.

Have you tried increasing your fat intake with every meal?

One of the most common questions we get from Precision Nutrition readers is whether we can help them personally. The answer is usually no, and has been for some time. And the reason is simply that there are more people that need help than there are qualified coaches to help them.

But every now and again, we open up a few spots in our coaching programs, and we're now accepting people on the waiting list for our group coaching programs: Lean Eating for Men, and Lean Eating for Women.
