Why Nutrition Is Crucial for Rugby

(According to a Head of Performance for USA Rugby)

“Rugby has a unique blend of skills that’s different from all other sports,” says Alex Ross, CSCS, USA Rugby’s Director of Performance—15s & Pathways. “A good way to think about it is that it combines the running of soccer with the contact of football.”

Competition often involves two to three matches a day with just a couple of hours between events. Training is equally demanding, typically consisting of six field sessions and four gym sessions a week. In short, two-a-days are the norm for rugby players year-round—whether they’re in season or not.

“As you can imagine, fueling these athletes is hugely important,” says Ross. “It’s critical that they’re strong enough to withstand repeated hits and tackles, fast enough to outrun opposing players, and fit enough to keep it up for more than an hour multiple times a day.”

If you aren’t fueling properly and you aren’t drinking enough fluids, you’re done.

As if that weren’t enough, there’s the added issue of hydration: “Rugby is an international game that is often played in hot climates,” says Ross. “If you aren’t fueling properly and you aren’t drinking enough fluids, you’re done.”

Don’t let that happen to you…
