Why Nutrition Is Crucial for Surfers
(According to a Top Surfing Strength and Performance Coach)
Surfing is an extreme watersport that pits the mind and body against an exponentially more powerful force of nature. But what many people don’t realize about surfing is that it’s really an endurance event, says Paul Norris, NASM-CPT, founder of Surf Ready Fitness in Costa Mesa, California, and strength coach to such international surfing icons as Kanoa Igarashi, Courtney Conlogue, and Lucca Mesinas.
“These athletes are out there for four to six hours at a time,” says Norris, adding that pro surfers often do two-a-days, starting on the water before transitioning to the gym. “They’re burning through an incredible number of calories—more than many other athletes—so it’s critical that their intake remains high so that they can maintain a high energy output.”
Whether it’s fueling the body during or between training sessions or events, it all comes down to nutrition.

Once that training session or competition is over, the athletes have to prioritize recovery so they can do it all again the next day.
“Whether it’s fueling the body during or between training sessions or events, it all comes down to nutrition,” says Norris. “If your nutrition isn’t dialed in and you don’t remain hydrated, your muscles won’t function properly, and your performance will dip.”
