Why Nutrition for BMX Racing Matters
(According to a World Champion and Olympic Gold Medalist)
“BMX racing is kind of like sprinting,” says Jamie Staff, a world champion BMX athlete, a 2008 Olympic gold medalist, and USA Cycling’s high performance director for BMX racing and freestyle. “It’s an all-out effort that’s almost entirely anaerobic—except unlike sprinting, the track is filled with different obstacles.”
Becoming a top racer requires elite strength, power, and reaction time, as well as significant time commitment—both on and off the bike. To optimize their training, Staff’s athletes also focus on something that wasn’t really a concern of many riders even just 10 years ago: nutrition.
“A lot of the athletes are young—they’re teenagers—and they grew up on fast foods,” says Staff. “It’s our job as coaches to educate and guide them—to show them the difference that proper fueling can make.”
Indeed, feeding and hydrating your body properly can mean the difference between finishing in the top three and not finishing at all. “Cramping, excessive fatigue, lack of focus—these are all things we see in athletes who don’t feed and hydrate themselves well,” says Staff. “When you get right down to it, the goal is sustained energy—that’s often what wins events.”
Don’t let that happen to you…
