Why Nutrition Is Crucial
for Powerlifters
(According to a PhD powerlifter)
Powerlifting is often considered a sport where strength is the only factor, but in reality, it’s a weight-class sport, and nutrition plays a critical role in determining the winner.
Eric Helms, PhD, a powerlifter, coach, and chief science officer of 3D Muscle Journey, says that 83 percent of world-class powerlifters choose to diet down to a lower weight class to gain an advantage. However, this strategy comes with challenges, such as the loss of muscle and strength and decreased energy levels, which can affect workout intensity and progress.
Dr. Helms recommends competing in the weight class closest to your “walk-around weight” as it allows you to train hard while staying lean with little effort. The less weight you have to cut before the contest, the less time you’ll spend in an energy deficit. The more energy you have, the harder you’ll be able to train in the final weeks.
And if you’re the only lifter in your weight class who didn’t have to diet down to qualify? That’s a huge advantage to bring to the platform.
