Why Nutrition Is Crucial
for Equestrians

(According to an Olympic Gold Medalist)

Depending on the discipline, an equestrian competition may only take two minutes (show jumping), or several days (three-day eventing courses). That means the degree of needed fitness can vary.

But even at low-level competitions, physical fitness tends to separate the decent riders from the great ones, says Leslie Howard, an Olympic gold and silver medalist in show jumping.

Howard, who now coaches athletes at every level of the sport, says any elite-level showjumper will spend five to eight hours a day riding and training their horses. On top of that, some athletes put in even more time in the gym.

“Like golf, I feel the rule of thumb is that even though you can get away with not a high degree of fitness, the elite athletes in the sport are all extremely fit, and that gives them the competitive edge,” she says.

Nutrition is key for achieving peak fitness. Plus, being under-fueled during training and competitions can negatively affect hand-eye coordination, balance, and stamina.

“Whether you’re feeding your horse or yourself, you are what you eat, and it’s important to pay attention to nutrition,” says Howard.
