Why Nutrition Is Crucial for Soccer

(According to the Director of Performance for the LA Galaxy)

Soccer, as much as any sport, is a game of carbohydrates. In a 90-minute match, a pro soccer player will run an average of 11 to 13 km (seven to eight miles), depending on their position. That includes around 60 sprints, covering about 10 percent of the total distance, along with dozens of jumps and tackles.

The combination of distance and velocity, starts and stops, and twists and turns depletes more than 50 percent of their muscle glycogen. Even 24 hours later, their glycogen stores are still 25 percent lower than their pre-match levels.

If you’re not disciplined every day with what you’re taking in nutritionally, then every day you train you’re less likely to be optimizing your performance.

Jim Liston, Director of High Performance and Innovation for the LA Galaxy

And here’s the kicker: Players at soccer’s highest level have to be ready to do it all again within 72 hours of the previous match,  says Jim Liston, director of high performance and innovation for Major League Soccer’s LA Galaxy. With training sessions almost every day in between matches, there is virtually no downtime.

“They’re either working or recovering from work,” says Liston. “If you’re not disciplined every day with what you’re taking in nutritionally, then every day you train you’re less likely to be optimizing your performance.”
