Why Nutrition Is Crucial
for BMX Freestyle
(According to a World Champion and Olympic Gold Medalist)
“Freestyle requires intense power and acute proprioception, as well as significant lower and upper body strength,” says Jamie Staff, a world champion BMX athlete, a 2008 Olympic gold medalist, and USA Cycling’s high performance director for BMX racing and freestyle. “Honestly, it’s mind-boggling in its athleticism,” says Staff.
Nutrition is also key. “It’s important for energy; it’s important for recovery; it’s important for adaptation,” says Staff, adding that proper hydration is also critical. “Equally important is nutrition timing—you want what you eat to fuel you and give you energy, not to weigh you down.”
The effects of poor nutrition and hydration are obvious as soon as an athlete hops on a bike. “They’re sluggish and tired, their energy levels are low, and their focus isn’t where it should be,” says Staff. That’s a problem when you’re performing as many tricks as possible during each 60-second round.
Adding proper nutrition strategies can feel overwhelming—but it doesn’t need to be. “You have to break everything down into small pieces and just try to nail as many as you can,” says Staff. “ Getting even a few of them spot on will have a big impact and lead to big gains.”
