Why Nutrition Is Crucial for Divers
(According to 3-Time NCAA National Diving Coach of the Year)
Divers spend mere seconds executing their skills in a competition, but the hours behind the scenes homing in on their strength, skills, and nutrition separate the good divers from the great. So like for all athletes, eating properly and staying hydrated is critical.
“Just because diving isn’t an endurance sport, it doesn’t mean they can eat whatever they want,” says University of Georgia Head Diving Coach Dan Laak, a 3-time NCAA National Coach of the Year. “A balanced diet is important to gain strength in the weight room and endure long hours at the pool both during training and competition.”
Some diving competitions last up to four hours or include two sessions in one day. “Divers who don’t stay properly fueled or hydrated run out of juice by the end,” says Laak. “Their concentration and strength drop off at the end of the contest, which is when they are most likely doing their hardest dives, and it is imperative that they are 100 percent.”
Laak recalls a diver who didn’t drink a lot of water because he worried it would weigh him down. What happened? The diver became dehydrated—causing his knees to buckle on his first dive, which prevented him from advancing to the semifinals.
