Why Nutrition Is Crucial
for Figure Skaters
(According to One of the World’s Top Figure Skating Coaches)
On the ice, figure skaters appear effortless during their three to four-minute routines. But it’s the countless hours behind the scenes homing in on strength, skills, and nutrition that turns good athletes into exceptional ones.
“On average, elite skaters move across the ice at about 17 miles per hour and absorb about 900 pounds of force on impact of their landings,” says Tom Zakrajsek, who has worked with some of the country’s best figure skaters, such as 2021 US Ladies Singles Champion Bradie Tennell and 2022 World Championships bronze medalist Vincent Zhou.
“They need the strength of a sprinter, the endurance of a marathon runner, the athleticism of a gymnast, and the grace and poise of a dancer.”
Without the right fuel at the right times of day—during the week and throughout the season—figure skaters cannot perform properly.
—Tom Zakrajsek, top figure skating coach to US National Champions and Olympic medalists
Elite-level figure skaters like the ones Zakrajsek coaches spend 25 to 30 hours per week, or about five hours per day, on and off the ice, to build the necessary strength, quickness, and flexibility to excel in competition.
“Without the right fuel at the right times of day—during the week and throughout the season—figure skaters cannot perform properly,” says Zakrajsek. “Very simply they lose focus and performance suffers when they aren’t fueled.”
