Why Nutrition Is Crucial for Football
(According to the Strength Coach for the NCAA Champions)
Achieving domination is no small feat in a sport where the average college player stands 6-foot 2-inches tall and weighs 230 pounds.
“The athletes are getting bigger, stronger, and more powerful,” says Scott Sinclair, CSCS, director of strength and conditioning for the Georgia Bulldogs, the 2021 and 2022 National College Football Champions. “But football is also a sport that requires explosiveness and stamina—you have to be able to endure four quarters and perform just as well in the fourth as you do in the first.”
The effects of [water] loss and poor nutrition are obvious on the field. The athlete will be sluggish and tired, he’ll start cramping, and he’ll make increasingly poor decisions.

That kind of endurance requires lots of effort on the practice field and in the weight room. “If you don’t put the right nutrients back in, you won’t build yourself back up to be stronger, faster, and more powerful,” he says.

If your nutrition and hydration aren’t dialed in, you won’t perform your best. “That’s why they’re huge elements of our program and key parts of the performance puzzle,” says Sinclair. “If you leave either one out, that puzzle won’t be complete, and neither will you.”
