Why Nutrition Is Crucial
for Sprinters
(According to 4-Time Olympic Gold Medalist Michael Johnson)
Given that their races can last as few as 10 seconds, you might not think nutrition is all that important for sprinters. Four-time Olympic gold medalist Michael Johnson would strongly disagree. Think of nutrition as the fuel that helps track athletes recover faster so they can train harder, says Johnson.
Known for his golden spikes, Johnson is considered not only one of the greatest sprinters in history but also the most consistent. At one point in his career, he went undefeated for 58 straight 400-meter races. At the 1996 Summer Olympics, Johnson won both the 200 meters and 400 meters, an achievement never matched before or since in men’s track.
“Early in my career, in my early 20s, I could train and recover without issue regardless of my nutrition. I probably wasn’t actually optimizing my training sessions, but I had no issues,” he says. “As I got older in my early 30s, if I wasn’t properly hydrating during the day, my risk of injury was greater and my recovery wasn’t as good.”
