Why Nutrition Is Crucial for Volleyball
(According to an Olympic Gold Medalist)
“Once you step on the court, fueling and hydration are critical,” says Dain Blanton, an Olympic beach volleyball gold medalist, adding: If you blink for a second and neglect either one, you’ll lose the match before it starts.
Blanton should know: Besides his own athletic accomplishments, he coached the USC beach volleyball program to back-to-back NCAA Division I women’s championships in 2021 and 2022. “I’ve seen athletes whose blood sugar was so low that they couldn’t generate enough power to keep the ball in play,” says Blanton. “I’ve also seen athletes who were so dehydrated that their whole system was compromised by cramping.”
Your training adaptations will be diminished if your nutrition is lacking.

Improper fueling also tanks your gains. “Your training adaptations will be diminished if your nutrition is lacking,” he says. “You want your energy to be high, your muscles to be recovering, and your body to be in a state that allows you to crush it the following day without breaking down.”
In short, dialing in your nutrition isn’t just a good idea—it’s essential. “You need to concentrate on every single thing that will give you an edge and optimize your performance,” says Blanton. “Figuring out the nutrition puzzle is key to achieving that.”
